I thought that if an earthquake hit we were all goners, that the city would be destroyed and the mountains around us would fall. Understanding is now pretty clear to me and almost embarrassing. I think that prior to this class I was terrified of the prospect of an earthquake occurring here in Utah. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why? Reflect on how you thought about earthquakes in Utah before you started this assignment and how you think about it now that the course is over. I believe I wasĪccurately able to clearly identify the plate boundaries and what was happening with each earthquake. I referred to my book and the internet, and asked Professor Kenney to clarify a few things and at some point it clicked. You have to look at the boundaries, consider the process, and then look for signs of the earthquake (trenches, ridges, strike-slips, mountain ranges, etc.) I wanted to look at the image from Google Earth and say, "okay, that is divergent because it looks like." I couldn't do that because you can't see an earthquake. You have divergent and convergent, along with transform all occurring along and on the same plate. For example, with the Indo-Australian plate there are different boundaries within that same plate. I was trying to place the plate name and boundary together, but plates do different things at different locations. As I started the process of looking for earthquakes I had to identify on my own, I became confused with identifying the boundaries. It took me awhile to figure out how the plate boundaries and the direction of movement cause the earthquakes to occur,Īnd then to process what happens (shifting, lifting, ripping, separating, subduction, etc.). Once that was working, I began looking for earthquakes that were listed in the book to better understand how the plates are laid out. I downloaded Google Earth through the links attached to the assignment page and then installed the real time earthquakes application. Describe any problems you had in trying to interpret these images. Outline the steps you took to analyze each image, and tell me about your thinking at each step. This assignment has you comparing satellite imagery through Google Earth. The two I have chosen are listed below with the reflection piece included: I was given a choice of three topics and able to select two from that list. For the last component of this assignment, I was asked to reflect on what I have learned.
